Invoking the principle of confidentiality in order to avoid job discrimination is seriously considered by the Joint NIH-DOE Working Group on Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) of human genome research. Yet, more importantly, ELSI supports "universal access to . . . basic health services" and states that "information about past, present or future health status, including genetic information, should not be used to deny health care coverage or services to anyone."
