The ‘demise’ of steady state cosmology may well be premature, since a number of cosmologists continue to construct models whose roots can be traced back to Hoyle’s early work. See for example H. C. Arp, G. Burbidge, F. Hoyle, J. V. Narlikar & N. C. Wickramasinghe, "The extragalactic Universe: an alternative view," Nature 346 (30 August, 1990), 807-812.
